The Department of Health and Human Services request has been approved by Defense Secretary Mark Esper to house up to 250 people in individual rooms until February 19, 2020 as a precaution for the coronavirus. According to Stars and Stripes the selected bases are Lackland AFB, Fort Carson, Travis AFB and Marine Crops Air Station Miramar.
At the moment, there are eight confirmed cases within the states, latest case coming from Massachusetts. Of course, with this precaution there is concern of personnel coming in contact with those infected. However, personnel will not be in direct contact with evacuees, nor have access to housing locations at this time.
People traveling home from China will be screened at a facility in China and screened again upon arrival into the U.S. before being taken to either base.
