Governor Abbott Sets Up Plan To Slowly Reopen Texas

Governor Greg Abbott said Friday that schools will be closed for the remainder of the academic year, but that other parts of the state will slowly begin to reopen soon. Abbott said he has formed a new task force of politicians, business leaders and doctors who will develop a strategic plan to reopen Texas.

“We’re beginning to see glimmers that the worst of COVID-19 may soon be behind us,” Abbott said, adding that the strategy must “be guided by data and doctors.”

Abbott said he’ll issue a number of executive orders that will, on a rolling basis, open up Texas businesses, hospitals and other parts of the state.

One of the orders will loosen restrictions on some medical procedures that had been temporarily paused to ensure hospital capacity.

Abbott said he would also open all state parks starting next week, but visitors must wear face coverings or masks and follow social distancing guidelines.

The second executive order focuses on the retail sector. Abbott said all retailers in Texas should be allowed to operate with to-go strategies, beginning next Friday, April 24. To look up participating businesses, go to dshs.texas.gov/coronavirus.
