Swift Seeks Speedy Decision In Ongoing Lyric-Theft Dispute

Taylor Swift is still battling a lawsuit claiming that she stole lyrics for her 2014 hit, “Shake It Off.” She’s currently seeking summary judgment and hopes it falls in her favor.

Swift is being sued by Sean Hall and Nathan Butler who claims Taylor infringed on the copyright of their 2001 song, “Playas Gon Play.”

In Hall and Butler’s song the lyrics contain, “the playas gon play/them haters gonna hate” and in Taylor’s song she sings, “the players gonna play, play, play, play, play/And the haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate.”

Hall and Butler’s case was dismissed in 2018 when the judge ruled that players playing and haters hating was all too “banal” for them to receive copyright protection, however, Hall and Butler took the case to the Ninth Circuit appeals court where judges criticized the speedy decision by the lower court.
