According to a report from The Athletic, The Brooklyn Nets are interested in hiring the Spurs’ Gregg Popovich as their next head coach as soon as the season comes to an end.
The article also reported that Kevin Durant is pushing Brooklyn to hire Popovich as the Spurs head coach has been his “favorite” for years. The Spurs pursued Durant in free agency in 2016, reportedly meeting with him in the Hamptons before he ultimately signed with the Golden State Warriors.
Coach Popovich, who has been the head coach for the Spurs since 1996, has not indicated that he is interested in the position or is willing to leave San Antonio. The Spurs missed the playoffs this year, ending a 22-year streak of consecutive postseason appearances and the Nets were swept out of the first round of the playoffs Sunday.
